Years (yr) - Time Conversions

A year is a unit of time. It is the length of time it takes for the Earth to make one revolution around the sun. The symbol that is commonly used for year is yr or y.

Based on the Julian calendar, there are 365.25 days in a year. Modern calendars typically report only 365 days in a year and save each 0.25 day fraction until 4 years have elapsed. The saved day (4 x 0.25 = 1 day) is added to the fourth year resulting in a year that is 366 days. This fourth year is called a Leap Year. In a Leap Year, the extra day is added to the month of February as February 29th.
