Kilocalories (kcal) - Energy Conversions

A kilocalorie is a unit of energy in the International System of Units (SI). The symbol for kilocalorie is kcal. A kilocalorie is also called a "large calorie" or "kilogram calorie".

A kilocalorie is measured as the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1°C from a standard initial temperature at a pressure of 1 atmosphere. The base unit for a kilocalorie is calorie and the prefix is kilo. The prefix kilo is derived from the Greek chilioi meaning thousand and is symbolized as k. Kilo denotes a factor of 1,000 which means that there are 1,000 calories in a kilocalorie.
